Kim Jong-un was address as Supreme Commander a few days ago, also as “great successor”, and today “Supreme Leader”. There is no doubt, Kim Jong-un is currently “in charge” – although I can’t begin to guess how much influence others have over him (is he a puppet for others or are they truly advisers, or somewhere in the middle?).
What I do know is that the Lord is able to move even through this change and the changes going on in North Korea today. Although in my flesh, I can perceive no good from Kim Jong-un jump to the top, God can work through him, or through the situation, or through others, or by infinite Ways I cannot imagine. Praise the Lord, trust in Him!

There is some hope that he will be more ‘moderate’ (that being a very relative term in NK) due to his time spent studying abroad. It’s just too early to tell.
Some have said that it’s time for the U.S. to really reach out to North Korea. But like you said, he may just be a puppet which would mean that nothing has really changed in North Korea.
